MEET DR. GAIL…
In 2005, I was fresh out of a very traditional Internal Medicine residency-training program. I had no idea what Functional Medicine was or that there were other very effective ways to approach chronic illness and optimize long-term health and wellness that did not involve popping prescription medications with a ton of side effects or having surgeries with long and often complicated recovery.
But I did not find Functional Medicine… It found me!
And it hit me like a ton of bricks courtesy of Henry, the oldest of my 3 beautiful nephews. Henry was 3 years old in 2005 and, almost in the same breath, my sister was given the devastating news that Henry had Autism and that there was nothing to be done for him.
Left to the devices of those “experts”, I would have lost my nephew at that moment and never been able to get to know the now very healthy, smart, funny, and quirky young man with Autism who he has become.
Thankfully, my sister wouldn’t accept that nothing could be done for him – and she quickly discovered a group of doctors who looked at things differently and were seeing great results with how they were approaching and treating Autism, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Chron’s & Ulcerative Colits), Allergies, Multiple Sclerosis, and other autoimmune and chronic disease.
They practiced something called Functional Medicine and it made total sense to me… and by early 2006 I became one of those doctors and have never looked back!
Since 2006, I have dedicated my Functional Medicine practice to the integrative care of those with neurodevelopmental disorders and chronic illness, as well as preventative medicine to optimize long-term health and wellness. This approach has guided and enhanced my professional success with so many patients over the years, but it is also responsible for my personal path to healing from Ulcerative Colitis and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and everything between.
In introducing me to Functional Medicine, Henry’s Autism was a silver lining for me.
— Professionally, it forced me to think outside the box, look at amazing medical research no one was talking about, and fill in the huge gaps left by my traditional medical school education about how good nutrition, a diverse and thriving gut microbiome, optimal mitochondrial function, decreasing inflammation, and a healthy gut/brain axis are the cornerstones to achieving and maintaining true health.
— Personally, it also forced me to think outside the box and has impacted me in ways that go so far beyond just helping me heal myself from multiple autoimmune diseases.
So, Henry was more than just my first Autism Superhero, he was also my first teacher of Functional Medicine and how it is possible to heal the body and mind from the inside out.
Once I saw the power and potential of healing through Functional Medicine, I couldn’t “unsee” it! If you haven’t seen it’s power yet, join our growing community and let me help you start or continue your journey to optimal health and wellness.
